International Air Travel Guide

We love it and we hate it. We like to go on vacation and we need it for business trips, but there is a downside to air travel. We have a love hate relationship with it, especially in these days of high security. With the advent of cheap, budget airlines, more of us are flying more than ever.

When going on a trip, the type of transport that you use will be a primary factor into the costs and duration of your journey. Though air travel has not gotten any easier over the last twenty years, with long lines, higher security and massive delays, there are ways that a person can go about choosing an appropriate airline. Despite upgrades to passenger meals and in flight entertainment, studies have shown that people choose airlines for their punctuality record and their favorable departure times.

Most people prefer a flight that involves few, if any, changes where possible. This can restrict your choice of air travel as these services are only offered by major US and UK airlines, and rarely by smaller carriers. But airline travel is gradually changing, and the choice is greater than it has ever been. The increasing number of direct services from many US cities gives the traveler a much better deal.

Note: There are good things about being on a plane. There is the chance to read, or snooze, perhaps watch a movie or two. Sometimes, the world conspires against me doing any of those things in peace. There is the talkative passenger sat next to me, and although I've known them for ten whole minutes, they tell me their life story in great detail.

One of the best ways of researching your choice is through the AOAG, the official airline guide for the US. One particular trap from travelers today is the 'code sharing' deals between airlines. The same flight number does not necessary mean the same plane or even the same airline anymore, so it pays to check carefully when considering all possibilities of air travel.

There are hundreds of airlines to choose from, but some adopt lower safety standards and maintenance procedures than the major international airlines. Some domestic airlines in China, for instance, have pretty poor safety records. There has been growing concern over expanding air travel in the country that may have affected standards.

In the former Soviet Union, there is now a proliferation of new carriers, raising eyebrows about the different safety measures that they adhere to. A number of these airlines compete on price, but it can be advisable to pay a little more and enjoy better comfort and a greater degree of reliability if you opt for air travel.

Some developing countries have excellent in flight service, but are not so good when booking your reservation. When looking into air travel within these countries, never attempt to make the booking by phone. It is much better to visit the airline's office and get the staff to validate the ticket in front of you. Always check and double check your reservation – many airlines in far flung places where I have traveled do not have computerized systems, and mistakes are frequently made on dates and times of bookings.

Many passengers may be worried about terrorist attacks or hijackings after the events of recent years, although the chances of being involved in an air travel accident of this kind are statistically remote. The best advice is to make a note of any airlines or airports that appear to be particularly vulnerable and avoid them if you can.

The security of airlines servicing the Middle East is particularly high, and measures adopted out of Heathrow, the world's busiest airport have thwarted many attempts at on air bombs. Air travel may require higher degrees of security now, but countries around the world have responded swiftly.

Note: The future of flying is in a state of flux at the moment with high security alerts and everyone is on edge. It looks like air travel is going to become more difficult and not easier. Perhaps they should re think the airport environment. A cinema would be good or they could put some beds in!
